Description

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup white chocolate chips (optional)
  • For the cream cheese frosting (optional):
  • 4 ounces cream cheese (softened)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 12 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar together until light and fluffy, about 2–3 minutes.
  4. Beat in the egg, red food coloring, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
  6. Fold in the white chocolate chips if using.
  7. Scoop rounded balls of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  8. Bake for 10–12 minutes, until the edges are set but the centers are still soft.
  9. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. To make the frosting, beat together the cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk until smooth and creamy.
  11. Spread or pipe the frosting onto the cooled cookies if desired.
