Description

A sophisticated version of the classic grilled cheese, featuring flaky puff pastry filled with gooey cheese.


Ingredients

  • 2 sheets puff pastry (about 500 g / 17.6 oz)
  • 200 g (7 oz) sharp cheddar cheese, sliced
  • 100 g (3.5 oz) Gruyère cheese, sliced
  • 30 g (2 tbsp) unsalted butter, melted
  • 15 ml (1 tbsp) Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 1 large egg, beaten with 15 ml (1 tbsp) water (for egg wash)
  • Flaky sea salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Thaw and chill the puff pastry.
  2. Cut and dock the pastry.
  3. Assemble sandwiches.
  4. Brush with egg wash and bake.
  5. Heat a skillet and finish cooking.
  6. Let rest and serve.

Notes

Make-ahead by assembling and freezing; bake from frozen with additional time.
