Description

This rich, smooth icing is perfect for slathering on your favorite cakes or brownies. A nostalgic recipe that’s easy to whip up.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine granulated sugar, cocoa powder, and a pinch of salt.
  2. Pour in milk and add butter to the dry mix. Stir well to combine.
  3. Place the saucepan over medium heat, stirring frequently until it comes to a boil.
  4. Once boiling, stop stirring and let it boil for 5 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
  6. Let the icing cool until thick enough to spread, then frost your cake or brownies.

Notes

If the icing is too runny, let it cool longer. You can also add coffee or peppermint extract for flavor variations.
