Description

A foolproof recipe for baking fresh, golden loaves of homemade bread that is easy and satisfying.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Optional: Fresh herbs like rosemary or thyme, or spices like garlic powder
  • Sea salt or poppy seeds for garnishing

Instructions

  1. Prep your ingredients by measuring out the flour and water (5 minutes).
  2. Mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl (5 minutes).
  3. Gradually add warm water while mixing to form a shaggy dough (5 minutes).
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth and elastic (10 minutes).
  5. Let the dough rise in a warm area until it doubles in size (2 hours).
  6. Punch down the dough, shape it into loaves, and let it rise again (1 hour).
  7. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C) (10 minutes).
  8. Drizzle the loaves with olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt before baking (25-30 minutes).

Notes

Keep flour in an airtight container for freshness. For a crustier loaf, place a pan of water in the oven while baking.
