Description

A classic comfort food, these hamburger steaks are juicy ground beef patties served with a rich, savory gravy made with caramelized onions and tender mushrooms. This easy recipe is perfect for weeknight dinners or any time you crave a hearty, satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Hamburger Steaks:
  • 1 ½ lbs (680 g) ground beef, 80/20
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or butter (for frying)
  • For the Onion Mushroom Gravy:
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 oz (225 g) mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups (480 ml) beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp dried thyme (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare patties: In a bowl, mix ground beef, diced onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. Shape into 4 equal patties.
  2. Sear patties: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the hamburger steaks and cook for 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  3. Cook onions and mushrooms: In the same skillet, melt butter. Add sliced onions and cook for 5 minutes until softened. Stir in mushrooms and cook until browned, about 5 minutes more.
  4. Make gravy: Sprinkle flour over the onions and mushrooms. Stir for 1–2 minutes until flour is absorbed. Slowly whisk in beef broth, scraping up browned bits from the pan. Add Worcestershire sauce and thyme. Simmer for 3–4 minutes until thickened.
  5. Simmer with patties: Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet. Spoon the onion mushroom gravy over them. Cover and simmer on low heat for 10 minutes, allowing flavors to meld.
  6. Serve: Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles, topped generously with the onion mushroom gravy.

Notes

  • Use 80/20 ground beef for the juiciest hamburger steaks.
  • Do not overmix the beef mixture; gentle handling ensures tender steaks.
  • Always sear the hamburger steaks first to lock in juices and flavor before simmering in the gravy.
  • Cook onions slowly to achieve natural sweetness.
  • Whisk the beef broth in gradually to prevent lumps in the gravy.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning before serving your hamburger steaks with onions and mushrooms.
