Instructions
- In a bowl, combine butter and sugar, beating until smooth and fluffy (about 5 minutes).
- Add egg, vanilla, and peppermint extract, mixing until well blended (about 3 minutes).
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Gradually add to the wet mixture until combined (about 5 minutes).
- Divide the dough in half; color one half with red gel food coloring.
- Wrap each portion in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
- Roll equal pieces of red and white dough into ropes and twist them together to form candy canes (approximately 20 minutes).
- Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C) and bake for 8-10 minutes on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Allow cookies to cool on trays before serving (about 10 minutes).
Notes
For added variety, try substituting chocolate mint or incorporate sprinkles into the dough.
