A classic American dessert made with layers of creamy vanilla pudding, fresh bananas, and crunchy vanilla wafers.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 ripe bananas, sliced
  • 1 box vanilla wafers
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 cup whipped cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Combine the sugar, flour, and salt in a saucepan.
  3. Whisk in the milk and cook over medium heat until thickened.
  4. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Beat the egg yolks in a bowl and temper with a bit of the hot pudding mixture.
  6. Mix the egg yolks back into the saucepan and cook for an additional 2 minutes.
  7. Layer the vanilla wafers, banana slices, and pudding in a serving dish.
  8. Top with whipped cream and chill for at least 2 hours before serving.

Notes

For best results, use very ripe bananas and let the pudding chill for several hours before serving to enhance the flavors.
