Description

A delightful twist on traditional apple fritters, these waffle donuts are fluffy, sweet, and perfect for breakfast or dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 medium apple, peeled and diced
  • 1 tbsp butter (for sautéing)
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar (for sautéing)
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon (for apples)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 23 tbsp milk (for glaze)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. In a small skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tbsp of butter. Add diced apples, brown sugar, and 1/2 tsp of cinnamon. Cook for 5–7 minutes until tender and caramelized.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix buttermilk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
  4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Fold in the cooled apple mixture.
  5. Preheat your waffle iron and lightly grease it. Spoon the batter into the center of each waffle mold, close, and cook for about 3–4 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Remove the waffle donuts and cool them on a wire rack. Whisk together powdered sugar, 2–3 tbsp of milk, and vanilla extract for the glaze. Dip the tops of the warm donuts into the glaze or drizzle it over.

Notes

Enjoy with a warm cup of spiced chai or fresh apple cider for an added flavor touch.
