  • 67 medium apples (about lbs / 1.1 kg), peeled and sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50g)
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (or cornstarch for gluten-free)
  • Crisp Topping:
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats (90g)
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour (90g)
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar (100g)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50g)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed (113g)
  • Optional: pinch of salt, 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine sliced apples with lemon juice, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar, and flour. Toss to coat evenly. Transfer to prepared dish.
  3. In another bowl, combine oats, flour, sugars, and cinnamon. Add cubed butter and cut in with a pastry cutter or fingers until crumbly. Stir in nuts if desired.
  4. Sprinkle topping evenly over apples. Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes or until bubbly and golden brown.
  5. Let cool 10–15 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
