- 6–7 medium apples (about 2½ lbs / 1.1 kg), peeled and sliced
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50g)
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (or cornstarch for gluten-free)
- Crisp Topping:
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats (90g)
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour (90g)
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar (100g)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50g)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed (113g)
- Optional: pinch of salt, 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, combine sliced apples with lemon juice, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar, and flour. Toss to coat evenly. Transfer to prepared dish.
- In another bowl, combine oats, flour, sugars, and cinnamon. Add cubed butter and cut in with a pastry cutter or fingers until crumbly. Stir in nuts if desired.
- Sprinkle topping evenly over apples. Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes or until bubbly and golden brown.
- Let cool 10–15 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
