Amish Onion Fritters

Amish Onion Fritters

Description

If you’re craving a warm, comforting snack that’ll draw your family to the kitchen like moths to a flame, you’re in for a treat with Amish Onion Fritters! These little bites are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, making them an authentic crowd-pleaser that’s perfect for any occasion—or just because you feel like indulging in something delicious!

Ingredients

Scale

Here’s what you’ll need to make these irresistible fritters. Don’t worry; you probably have most of these in your pantry already!

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (or more if you’re feeling brave!)
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Prep the Onions: Start by slicing those onions. It’s okay if they make you cry a little—think of it as a free facial!
  2. Make the Batter: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper. In a separate bowl, combine the egg and milk, then slowly mix it into the flour mixture until it’s just combined.
  3. Add the Onions: Fold the sliced onions into the batter, making sure each onion slice is well-coated. You want them to be buddies with that batter!
  4. Heat the Oil: In a large skillet, heat about 1 inch of oil over medium heat. You’ll know it’s ready when a small drop of batter sizzles upon contact.
  5. Fry the Fritters: Using a spoon, carefully drop spoonfuls of the onion mixture into the hot oil. Don’t overcrowd the pan; give them some breathing room! Fry until they’re golden brown on each side (about 3-4 minutes per side).
  6. Drain and Serve: Once they’re done, transfer the fritters to a plate lined with paper towels to soak up that excess oil. At this point, you can also sprinkle a little salt on top while they’re hot!

Notes

    • Test the oil temperature by dropping in a small bit of batter. If it bubbles and rises, you’re ready to fry!
    • Don’t fret about the shape—freestyle is the way to go with fritters. They can be round, oval, or, let’s be honest, whatever shape they feel like taking today!
    • Optional add-ins: Want to spice things up? Try adding diced jalapeños for a kick or some cheddar cheese for a melty surprise!
